Chronic Headaches or Path Clearing Compass?

I have had headaches for as long as I can remember. I have memories of me as a very small child clutching my “headache pillow” for dear life. I would just breath in the comforting smell of the feathers and pray relief would come soon. After my daughter was born I had daily headaches for 18 months. I visited several doctors and tried all of their suggestions to no avail. I wish I would have had a mind/body coach.

Now, I know my headaches can be a guide. Using mind/body tools (I know this sounds woo but…) I talk to my headaches. When I connect with them they are the shape of a small tornado. Believe or not, this is a friendly tornado with helpful messages. The first message I received was to let go of guilt from leaving others behind and enjoying my precious life. Thanks to mind/body tools, before this I had already starting following the not so subtle cues from my headaches. I had people in my life that, if I had contact with, I would get an instant headache. There were also activities and other people who would bring on mild headaches. Sometimes I was just over committing and not scheduling time for me. I started to heed the warning and limit if not stop contact with some people. I was careful not to over schedule and checked in with my body for any resistance to activities. I instantly noticed a reduction in frequency and intensity of headaches. It seems now, I need to let go of some guilt and remind myself that when I release people they have the opportunity to find new healthy relationships also.

Feeling a friendly connection with my headaches was such a revelation that I cried tears of relief. I was able to let go of the feeling of being trapped by 8-10 days of constant headaches. I started to see them as a part of me with messages to guide me on my path. I have replaced thoughts like “I am broken or damaged” with thoughts of “how perfect, I have my own personal compass to guide me when I get off track” and “what do I need to learn from this”. This feels like self-love and that feels so much better for me and those around me.
If you have any chronic pain a mind/body coach can help you make sense of the pain. Please, listen to your body and pay attention to what’s going on when you are in the midst of a painful episode. Your body never lies so let it be your own personal path clearing compass. I am sending you love and healing energy on your journey.
